Journal #6 Interactive Boards

Interactive Boards
An interactive board is an interactive display that connects to a projector and a computer. The projector projects the connected computer screen onto a white board. The controlled users use a pen, finger, stylus, or other digital devices to control the projected computer screen. With interactive boards you can also interact with shared online resources, which are provided through interactive websites. Teachers are able to save notes written on the board as an electric file through the software supplied with the interactive whiteboard. According the to discussion regarding Are Interactive whiteboards necessary?, one user replies that she thinks so. She views the smartboards as a “look at me, the teacher. I’m up in front, you’re in your seat listening” type of technology, white the projectors and laptops change the dynamic of the classroom in a more powerful way. Students have shown more interest in classroom interaction with the use of the interactive whiteboards. In the discussion about SmartBoard or Promethean, a user writes that the Smart notebook software cannot be freely used by anyone. Their website states very clearly about downloading it and copyright rules. In the discussion, users collaborated about the idea of interactive boards being more useful in a certain grade. One user disagreed with another that interactive board “are better in primary grades.” She mentions that the interactive boards are used at her elementary and Junior High school, and says that she has observed their use at all grade level and doesn’t see a marked difference in engagement of the students.

This article presents the idea of Virtual Field Trips (VFTs), which are field trips that are done virtually over the Internet, or videoconferencing. They can involve touring a historic site, witnessing scientific experiments or processes at museums or organizations, watching live demonstrations in the field, attending folk festivals, and much more.
Traditional field trips have become less common today because travel costs have risen over the past few years, causing Virtual Field Trips to become more popular. The VTRs allow students and teachers to visit other places they normally wouldn’t be able to visit.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Virtual Field Trips?
The Virtual Field Trips offer students a variety of different ways to learn, and are fun for students. The Virtual Field trips don’t require pricey fairs and ticket prices.  Also, an advantage to the Virtual Field Trips is that teachers and staff members don’t have to worry about students’ safety and liability.  The disadvantages of the Virtual Field Trips include computer, software, and camera costs.  Many schools cannot afford to provide computers students.

Would you use Virtual Field Trips in your classroom?

I would really enjoy using Virtual Field Trips in my classrooms for many reasons.  If I were a student, I would enjoy the VFTs because they are different from the normal activities done in classrooms.  Rather than doing busy work, and learning from textbooks, students can use the Virtual Field create a constructive learning environment.

Journal #4 Finding students who learn with Media

This article talks about a student-created media that incorporates Web-based authoring tools into the curriculum. It also talks about how it is important for students to use technology to make media. An example of web-based authoring tools is the Primary Access Movie Maker. This is used by students to create digital are which include sound, special effects, pictures and text. After a study done to see is students prefer to use these types of programs rather than writing essays or taking written exams, they found that most of the time students would rather use these types of programs for projects.

Do you feel that these types of programs will be included in course curriculums at most schools within the next 5-10 years?
Yes I feel that these types of programs will be required to include in course curriculums at most almost all schools within the next 5-10 years. Other programs seen used in education include Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. At schools such as CSUSM, these programs are mandatory for students to be familiar with. There is even an exam which students must pass before a certain year that tests you on such programs.

What are your concerns with limited funding sources for these programs in schools?
I feel that there are a lot of public schools, most even, that would not be able to fund enough money to provide these programs or computers in the school. Right now, laptops and notebooks are too expensive to require all students to purchase one for school. Perhaps education should strive towards funding for laptop computers for each student.
